mocha honey spice old fashioned
So much newfound love for chocolate bitters, and blood oranges, and honestly, for weekend cocktails.
I’d like to prelude by saying this is not an aggressively sweet cocktail, not inspired by your friendly neighborhood coffeehouse’s sugarbomb latte. Rather, it is an ode to a subtle, balanced marriage of chocolate bitters and brewed coffee. How J described this cocktail: balanced That word is more an achievement than tasty, or good, as it describes such a blend not overwhelming to the tastebuds in any one direction or another.
No worries, this cocktail isn’t complicated. Your greatest challenge is simmering a honey simple syrup with lots of orange peel, ginger, and cinnamon, and once finished you’ll likely have a good portion left to store for further cocktails or other goodies. Maybe a hot toddy, I haven’t tried it that way but I’d imagine it’d compliment the warming throat-soothing qualities nicely.
When the syrup is ready, the rest of the work goes to the shaker. Bourbon, chocolate bitters, and cold coffee. Do a little jig as you shake it with some ice, pour it into a fancy glass (or a plastic one, whatever tickles your fancy), and place some blood orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and shaved chocolate in and on the glass to make the drink even prettier. Cheers!
