autumn elderflower spritz

Picture perfect and tastes good, too.

I wasn’t going to do a cocktail this week. Got home from The Day Job on Friday with the idea in mind, but without really wanting to execute. That morning I forewent my usual run in favor of plopping on the couch and sleeping an extra hour or so – which didn’t help a whole lot in the grand scheme, but did provide some relief.

But, I got my run in midday (not my smartest plan but hey), had lunch, and decided to try and capture the last of the pretty afternoon light and enjoy a drink to boot. Glad I did. Sometimes you just need to let yourself reset and be a human for awhile before reentering productivity mode.

This pretty, fizzy drink is one of my favorites lately, especially with our temps being unseasonably warm and far less than cozy. I tend to forget how much I like elderflower spritzes (also called a Hugo spritz or a St. Germain spritz), and this one is perfect for the season in question. Just a few little ingredients and a refreshing sip is in your hands.

Fizzled Out

Get ahold of some good-quality cranberry juice and apple butter. Then, some St. Germain, prosecco, and sparkling water. Then, mixy mixy!

First, I like to shake up the apple butter with the cranberry juice and St. Germain. You can stir it if you prefer, but I find the apple butter incorporates much better when it’s manhandled.

Pour this little potion into a cocktail glass filled with ice. Splash on your prosecco (champagne works fine in a pinch, too) and finish with a plop of sparkling water. An extra bit of bubble never hurt no one.

Serve it up simple or make it pretty. I like some fresh cranberries, a star anise, and a cinnamon stick on top. My typical autumnal suspects. A few apple slices would be nice, too, if you’ve got some apples around to use.

Hope ya’ll have a lovely weekend. I’m finally off The Day Job tomorrow and plan to take that day to pamper myself in some fashion. Starting with a 10 mile run, most likely. Fucken cheers!
