basil mint julep
Happy Mother’s Day, Kentucky Derby, went through a week without committing a high crime…Whatever occasion you’re observing, this Basil Mint Julep is here to help you celebrate.
Since returning from vacation, I’ve been in quite a funk. Typical, really. This time around, though, I’m attempting in earnest to usher in little moments of luxury into the everyday. Weekly at-home face masks, heading out for coffee a few days, an afternoon treat…those minor habits can weave into something more meaningful.
I always think more of us need to make time for care. I’m sure I’ve repeated that mantra over and over again, but even I fall into the constant-busy-is-good trap, and need to remind myself that slowing down is powerful and helpful for maintaining everyday balance.
Spring Jewel
For you, slowing down might mean mixing up a drink and hanging on the couch. This julep is your best mate for a night like so. Mint and basil marry to create a tingly fresh backdrop for cozy bourbon and a pop of sparkling water. I chose honey as the sweetener instead of the usual simple syrup.
The steps are foolproof. Muddle the mint and basil with some honey, then measure in the bourbon. Load up the shaker with ice and wiggle while you’re jiggling free. Pour into a glass, garnish as you’d like (I enjoy more herbs and maybe a flower). Bottoms up!
I’m not huge on the Kentucky Derby, so I won’t be paying much attention to the 10 hours of pregame or the 20 second event itself. I’m not one to wager money over anything, and that’s pretty much the point of the race. I know many are, though, so maybe this cocktail will be an enjoyable accompaniment.
And if mom likes bourbon, well, you can’t go wrong. Unless you spill it on her clean floor. Then I’d run if I were you.
