christmas tequila sangria
One final little ode to Christmas weekend. Of course, we need a cocktail, don’t we?
I am damn tired and unsure of how legible this writeup will be (especially because I’m STILL having sticky keys issues. Gah). But here I go, trying, because I want ya’ll to have a nice drink to enjoy on Christmas Eve and/or Day.
I’ve enjoyed sangrias of late – they’re a simple way to serve a crowd, and usually wind up looking rather pretty without an excess of effort. Thank the abundance of fruits. I’ve made a few Christmasy pitcher cocktails and I think this guy might be my favorite.
Also, weirdly, I think its also suitable for Halloween. Perhaps the deep hue and plentiful red fruit. Stow this recipe away for next spooky season, then. Love me a good multitasking formula, ya know?
Five minutes to stir up, an hour or so to chill. Quick, tasty, serves plenty. Perfect for ye ole holidays.
Ayyyy, Sang-a-ria
Not how the song goes, but hey, it works.
Basically you need a shit ton of shit on hand, and something to mix it in and with. As far as the shit ton of shit goes…
Red wine…Feel free to use a cheap bottle. I bought a cabernet, but anything works, really.
Orange liqueur (Cointreau is my choice)
Tequila…Any variety. I like anejo styles.
Pomegranate and cranberry juices
Maple syrup
Fruits…I use apple, orange, cranberries, and pomegranate arils.
Stir all that up in a pitcher or punch bowl. Then, pop it in the fridge for at least an hour to fuse and cool down. Up to overnight is great, too.
Then, all you gotta do is serve. I like to garnish with fresh mint; rosemary works well too. Make sure some of those boozy apples and oranges slip their way into each glass. Best little endcap after the main sip as been slurped.
If you have any sangria left over, I recommend removing remaining orange slices from the pitcher. Over time, the rind will catalyze a sour flavor in the sangria: orange omitted, it will last an extra three days.
We probably won’t talk between now and Christmas, so merriest of days to all of you. I hope you find peace, joy, and contentment, or at the very least, some semblance of inner quiet.
