eggnog espresso martini

Excess of eggnog? Put it in your coffee, why don’t you.

I remember when a certain coffee chain served an eggnog latte around the holidays. The sound of the steam wand churning that concoction was nothing short of appalling – it was like a fucken Nazgul scream, or screeching tires, or a cat with it’s paw stuck in a garage door. But, amongst the customer base were true loyalists who swore the combination worked, despite it’s alarming calorie count and even more alarming cacophony.

I found myself with an excess of eggnog after completing another recent project – which you’ll see soon, she is SO CUTE – so a cheerful Christmas cocktail felt right. This Eggnog Espresso Martini is creamy and rich, with a couple shots of espresso and a dash of Kahlua for a perfectly caffeinated edge while maintaining the cozy allure of the ‘nog.

Recommend this babe for a post-dinner sip while the fire crackles and the conversation mellows while sleepy eyes and gentler talk encompasses the evening’s vibe. Or, if your life is less glamorous like mine, while sprawled on the couch watching The Santa Clause after eating way too many salmon bruschetta crostini.

Right In the Nog’gen

I never loved eggnog, but as I tried more and more throughout the past couple years, I find it less offensive and more appealing. Particularly when I work it into recipes with other flavors to calm it’s intense flavor.

This martini is so easy. No syrups, no fancy ingredients, nada, just the refined and timeless mix of espresso martini ingredients with a snap of eggnog to boost it up.

To start, pull two shots of espresso. If you don’t have an espresso machine, ask for one for Christmas…or, brew 1/4 cup of very strong coffee, but know that the flavor won’t be quite the same and the texture not as smooth. Throw the shots into a shaker with eggnog, vodka (I LOVE vanilla vodka in this), Kahlua, and a dash of vanilla extract, as well as ice.

Shake this puppy up until frosty, then strain into your favorite coupe glass. Garnish with a lil star anise pod and you’re good to drink it up, buttercup!

A note – because of the creaminess of the eggnog, you won’t have that pretty crema cap characteristic of espresso martinis. So don’t feel like you did something wrong or that your shots are dead because that layer never appears.

Bottoms up, it’s the weekend, bros! I’ll cheers to that.
