Who amongst ya’ll fine folks has seen the Super Mario Bros. movie?

J and I don’t typically see movies because the expense isn’t oft justified by what’s in theaters. Movies aren’t cheap nowadays, and original content is fairly rare – before this weekend, I think we’ve only spectated Marvel and Star Wars films. Most everything else we kind of just wait on until it’s streaming somewhere.

The Mario Bros. movie was one that excited me for a long time and this weekend we got tickets at the fancy theater nearby. It was actually packed, I haven’t seen a theater so full in a long while. I love the span of ages spectating, too: there was a few families, some younger college-looking kids, people around my age, and maybe a few older folks, too. The theater dishes up dinner before the show so I enjoyed a strawberry mojito (honestly not that great, mostly tasted like Sprite) and a poke bowl. Which made me want to whip up some spicy mayo this week…

Let me tell you, I don’t know what the fuck Rotten Tomatoes wanted from this movie, but I found it adorable and a worthwhile feel-good viewing. So many amazing throwbacks, some waaaay far back and others more recent that I didn’t even really get, but that’s what makes it appealing for a variety of ages. Jack Black voicing Bowser was brilliant, there was humor, and if you feel like looking thematically into the plot, a nice underlying message.

I’m sure from a cinematic standpoint there were plenty of flaws, but that’s not why the everyday derp sees this film. It’s just a pure, adventurous enjoyment. Highly recommend if you need to get out of your head a bit and enjoy a little reprieve from reality.

I quite needed that break from life because this past week threw a whole bulk-sized can of whoopass on me. I’m incresingly impatient with The Day Job and the itch to escape cannot be quelled by simple scratching. As I’m sure I’ve said, I am not a patient person, and while I’m making strides and am encouraged by such, I feel like I need to do more to propel myself forward.

IG has also proven a frustrating realm to navigate: though I love sharing shit on the grid, nobody seems to know what the fuck the algorithm wants nowadays. So, I encourage ya’ll to subscribe to my email list for meal plans and all that tasty weekly hullaballoo. Don’t worry, I’m not interested in bombarding your inbox with clingy meaningless bullshit – aside from those two things, my monthly blast, and a couple bonus newsletters now and again, I’m pretty conservative, and try to make everything I do send valuable to you.

I asked on Instagram over the weekend who ya’ll played in Mario Kart or Party Party, and every single answer was Yoshi. I also choose Yoshi, but second choice would probably be Boo or Luigi depending on who else was playing. Strangely, I almost never opt for Mario. Seems too cliche, you know?

Here’s hoping for a swell week. It’s actually raining this morning, and apparently stormed overnight (I must’ve slept right through it in my braindead state), so a cozy candle and my favorite stroopwafels were in order after my walk. Makes for a good morning.

By the way, I’ve got a sweet-ass discount for you! If your bar cart is missing a bottle o’ vodka, introduce yoself to Nightbloøm – it’s the perfect mixer for last week’s Strawberry Hibiscus Ginger Fizz and the London Fog Martini which rolled out on Instagram Saturday! Use the code FOULMOUTHGOURMET15 for 15% off your cart. Check out their bottles here and start shopping!

The Fuck We Cookin’ This Week?

A spicy Asian-style salmon sheetpan dinner…

A melty vegetarian sandwich perfect for lunch…

Sweet and simple muffins…

Probably more doughnuts because I feel like it…

A fresh pitcher drink to enjoy with friends…

A Few Things I’m Digging

Biscoff…I actually never had cookie butter, or the Lotus cookies, before I baked this week’s doughnuts, but holy smokes it’s delicious!

Coffee…Tried out this mocha marshmallow coffee and actually quite like it! Definitely flavored but I wouldn’t call it sweet on its own. Nice little treat in the morning.

Super Mario Bros…Guys, go see the new Mario movie. It’s such a feel-good treat, and a huge hit of nostalgia. Plus, it’s short enough for our week-ass attention spans.

Shops and Wish List

Fashion

Target…A few new swim coverups hit the site and they’re so purdy! This bold purple halter dress is perfect for an eye-catching look and this black romper is nice for a more conservative style. This twisted-front swim top is adorable Liking these mid-rise utility shorts, they look rather comfy and roomy which I prefer over tighter styles.

Kitchen & Dining

Wayfair…(Not so) patiently waiting for this oversized serving board to come back in stock. Been wanting a big rectangular paddle for staging (especially pizza, because pizza is my bane).

Week in Training

Monday, 4.10: 4 miles, 11:18 pace + 25 minute full body

Hamstring wasn’t as cranky today, and kept the effort pretty chill for the 2 minute run intervals. Felt fairly nice outside with a stiff breeze and lower temps. My allergies, though, made breathing remarkably hard. I felt like I was choking the whole time.

Strength:

  • 4 x 12 triceps pulse 25#
  • 4 x 20 dumbell squat hand-off 25#
  • 4 x 12 ea. glute bridge 25#
  • 4 x 15 waiter curl 25#
  • Core work

Tuesday, 4.11: 6 mile walk (1:32:10)

Wasn’t much in the mood to do anything but stroll, so stroll I did. Really windy and brisk but nice and refreshing overall!

Wednesday, 4.12: 5.27 miles, 11:24 pace + 20 minute full body

Allergies have me seriously suffocating during each run. I persist anyway, but yeah, not too pleasant. Hamstring was tight at first but calmed down later, and it started to drizzle! Made for a very cozy coffee and stroopwafel after the workouts.

Strength:

  • 4 x 10 ea. chest press with deadbug 25#
  • 4 x 15 deadlift 50#
  • 4 x 10 pullover with deadbug 25#
  • Core work

Thursday, 4.13: 6 mile walk (1:31:00)

Yesterday was such a hurried, frantic day that I woke up feeling the exact same anxiety rush. Shit, I cried over not being able to immediately locate my coffee filters! That’s when I know I need to take a step back and allow myself a slow morning. I wasn’t intended to walk that long but I saw the tail of a ship over the buildings, so I had to say hello.

Friday, 4.14: 5.15 mile walk (1:20:00)

Really leaning towards a good ole exercise break – except walking, or if I’m really in the mood to lift. I’m stressed, sore, and tired, and while the Instarun community likes to vouch for how running is therapeutic, sometimes you just need gentler activity. Still enjoying my long walks so keeping those in the rotation! Just feeling like being more intuitive.

Saturday, 4.15: 8 mile walk (2:07:00) + 20 minute full body

Felt like lifting a little after a long walk, and kept it to moves I felt like doing. Very still in the morning and I think the opossum I’ve seen lurking on my walking path fell in the bay? Poor dude.

Strength:

  • 3 x 12 narrow press 50#
  • 3 x 12 ab rollup 15#
  • 3 x 12 row 25#
  • 3 x 12 sumo squat 50#

Total running mileage: 9.27

Total walking mileage: 32.3
