Dudes, I almost never get sick, but this weekend I was smacked by a random respiratory infection (not The Respiratory Infection). Started Friday with a very random dry cough and progressed as many of those sicknesses do: fatigue, slight fever, drippy nose, etc. Thankfully, the fever only lasted a night and broke by Sunday morning, but I was still left feeling like a clogged up mass of phlegm.

Being under the weather does heighten my gratitude for my general wellbeing, as typical a statement as that is. I’m quite healthy overall and, like I said, viruses normally shun me (stomach bugs are the one thing to which I’m pretty prone). I’m quite offended that this one snuck through. For fuck’s sake, I even ran 10 miles on Saturday morning thinking I only had some minor allergies. Dumb. Luckily, I was mostly functional over the weekend and able to test a couple recipes, with lots of sitting breaks, and did some housekeeping on my email blasts and on the site.

Speaking of – I started up a weekly email roundup of FMG posts today, so hopefully some of ya’ll find it easier to read the fresh posts. An Instagram poll indicated this would be the case, and though it might be hard to fathom, I actually do listen to those polls. Your input is remarkably helpful for scheduling recipes and figuring out what content speaks most to your soul. If you haven’t already, you can join the Foul Mouth Flock here!

Today’s Labor Day, and I have 0 plans and compromised tastebuds. That is the worst part of being sick – the loss of taste. How am I supposed to do anything in the kitchen if I can’t fucking figure out if it tastes good or if my brain is tricking me into weird sensations because the virus messed up my receptors? First world frustrations to the max, dudes.

Moaning aside, I hope all you have some relaxing venture planned for today, whether you have to work a bit or are free entirely!

The Fuck We Eating This Week?

A rich and creamy gnocchi skillet…

A sticky salmon bowl with roasted autumnal veggies…

A delightful fall pizza…

Comforting mushroom soup…

The first apple treat of the season!…

A transitional cocktail that’s equal parts refreshing and cozy…

A Few Things I’m Digging

Pumpkin scones…I’ve been straight craving my Better than Coffee Shop Glazed Pumpkin Scones since I baked them the other week.

Protein…Surprised how much I like the Vega Sport Peanut Butter flavor. Things duplicating the taste of peanut butter usually suck, but this one isn’t too roasty and definitely isn’t sweet. Really nice in a bowl of oats!

Soup…Getting down with the sickness this week means Comforting Classic Chickpea Noodle Soup on repeat. One of my favorite recipes on FMG, a standby when one of us feels like shit.

Mini skirt…Wore this A New Day Mini A-Line Skirt for our date night last week, so comfy and very flattering.

Candle…Fall blooms in my house, and this crackling wick Vanilla Pumpkin Candle is flawless for channeling the seasonal mood even when there’s a 77 dew point outside. Love the stucco design on it as well!

Goals for the Week

9.12 meal plan…

Clean bathroom…Shit’s gotta be done, you know?

Essentials for When You Feel Like Shit

Being down with the sickness means lots of self care this weekend. Below are my picks for staying comfy, hydrated, and nourished while you recover from whatever ickiness plagues you.

Shops and Wish List

Fashion

Target…Summer send-off sale means loads of temptations. Picking up the black slip dress, a great layering piece under an oversized blazer or worn with a belt to cinch the waist. Wanted some knee boots and the taupe Harlan boots were perfect for what I imagined. I definitely can’t pull off a sock boot due to my massive calves. Intrigued by the Thea mules for both casual daily wear and for the evening, maybe with wide-leg pants and a satin tank.

Uniqlo…Really liking some of the new arrivals for fall. The smooth stretch cotton turtleneck comes in quite a few colors but I like the beige or dark green the best. Great with a black miniskirt. Looking into their lounge slippers to wear around the house since I’ve been bereft of house shoes for quite some time now!

Skincare/Wellness

Dossier…Loved the Citrus Green Apple so much I bought the Floral Pear for myself, Musky Green Tea for J (he owns the cologne for which this scent is supposedly a dupe), and Woody Freesia for my mom. This perfume curiosity is proving dangerous…

Naturium…Bit of a sale going on so I’m planning to pick up the Camellia Cleansing Oil and the BHA 2% Liquid to try; the latter is effectively a toner for evening out skin tone and overall brightening. Interested in the Azelaic Acid Emulsion 10% to calm the blotchiness and texture my skin has left over from my acne days.

Week in Training

Monday, 8.29: 12.06 miles, 11:06 pace + 23 minutes back & biceps

Glorious, glorious run. I felt so energized and happy I ran in circles around my neighborhood to reach 12. I don’t know if I’ll go further than this very often, if at all, until the weather cools off, but it was nice to feel so normal for the distance.

Strength:

  • 3 x 10 underhand row 45#
  • 3 x 11 curl 20#
  • 4 x 8 mid row 80#
  • 3 x 8 cable curl 41#
  • 3 x 10 wide row 35#

Tuesday, 8.30: 7.23 miles, 10:55 pace + 23 minute swim

Surprised I felt so strong during this run considering how bad my allergies were when I got up. Even my chest has been congested, but this was nice and the breeze was a lifesaver. Had my tire appointment after a truncated work shift, and being stuck in that stuffy little waiting room left me sluggish and craving some sunshine, so I hung out in our little pool for a bit of a splash. Definitely helped.

Wednesday, 8.31: 10.09 miles, 11:00 pace + 35 minute legs

Not my best run, not my worst. Ready to be done by the final couple miles. I still feel really congested and meh, though none of my stats seem to point to any illness. Perhaps just something nasty floating around.

Strength:

  • 3 x 10 frog squat 70#
  • 4 x 8 ea. single leg extension 70#
  • 3 x 12 elevated sumo squat 70#
  • 3 x 9 weighted donkey kick 35#
  • 3 x 15 deficit deadlift 70#
  • 3 x 12 leg press 190#

Thursday, 9.1: 4.01 mile walk (1:02:00)

Friday, 9.2: 7.09 miles, 11:09 pace + 20 minute chest & tris + 15 minute swim

Okay run, felt pretty warm and my legs weren’t really getting in sync. Quickly got in a strength workout and dipped in the pool after work to cool off.

Strength:

  • 3 x 11 ea. single arm extension 20#
  • 3 x 11 pullover 45#
  • 3 x 10 press down 37#
  • 4 x 11 chest fly 25#

Saturday, 9.3: 10.07 miles, 11:19 pace + 45 minute legs & shoulders

I feel like I’m coming down with something. I’ve had a nasty dry cough since the middle of Friday, though that’s the only odd thing going on and otherwise my energy levels are the same. Two tests were negative. Run felt okay, definitely tired by the end and maybe a bit more than usual. I didn’t have any coughing fits except for a couple random hacks here and there. Very mysterious.

Strength:

  • 3 x 10 deadlift 120#
  • 3 x 8 ea. single leg extension 80#
  • 4 x 10 double pulse sumo squat 60#
  • 3 x 10 ea. single leg press 120#
  • 3 x 12 ea. weighted banded clam 15#
  • 3 x 12 pull apart 20#
  • 3 x 10 ea. single arm front raise 15#

Sunday, 9.4: 4.02 mile walk (1:05:00)

Slow walk attempting to clear up some congestion. Worked for a bit, but I was pretty tired afterwards.

Total running mileage: 46.53
