valentine’s m&m oreo cookies
Maybe your Valentine’s is yourself, and you bake these up for a solo date night. Perfectly acceptable.
I’m quite the V-Day cynic, honestly. Another occasion rife with expectation and often riddled with disappointment as a result; plus, pretty much a marketing holiday when it comes down to it. Pink tax on every aisle. But, I can’t deny that I quite love the color scheme and just how pretty everything is.
Reds and pinks and whites? I’m into it. As much of a man I am, too, I love cute little hearts on everything. Last year I bought a plush heart pillow for my couch and this year a pair of dice pillows with hearts instead of dots.
These cookies certainly fit that frilly but satisfying aesthetic. Plus, they taste bomb as fuck. If your person is worth their salt at all – or if you’re worth your own salt, which you definitely are if you’re reading this bullshit here – they’ll adore a batch of these babies for the occasion.
Or, if you’re one of them galentine’s day folks, a couple dozen on display (then in your mouth) for brunch is a swell plan, too.
Oreo-OH YEAH
I say this every goddamn recipe, but my cookie formula is, at it’s core, same-same each time. We just add new shit with every iteration.
First off, cream that butter with dark brown and regular sugars. Whip in two eggs, one at a time, then lots of vanilla.
Mix in flour, baking soda, and salt next. Do not overmix. Do not pass go. Steal $200 because life is anarchy and meant to be lived dangerously. No, don’t do that. Use a rubber spatula and fold in your Valentine’s-hued M&Ms and crushed Oreo cookies.
Sidebar: to crush the Oreos, I usually place cookies in a bag, seal it well, and step on the cookies repeatedly until large but manageable shards form. To get the 1 cup of cookies needed in the recipe, you will use about a row from the box.
Scoopdy Doop
Grab heaping tablespoon-sized balls of dough from the bowl, roll into a more cohesive ball, and set on a big parchment-lined baking sheet.
Press a few more M&Ms and/or crushed Oreos into each cookie ball. Bake 8 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven, smack against the counter a few times to flatten the centers of the cookies, and return to the oven for a few more minutes. The cookies should be nicely set around the edges, but still a little soft in the center.
I always like a little flaky salt with my cookies, but this is optional. These guys in particular are pretty enough without the extra sparkle.
If you’re storing these cookies for later (good luck with any type of longevity cos they be good):5 days at room temp, a week in the fridge, a few months in the freezer.
What are your feels about V-Day: like it or hate it? I wouldn’t even say I hate it, I just think too much importance is attached to its existence. I guess you could argue that with anything, but today the argument is about the so-dubbed holiday. Ya’ll can fight over other shit without my involvement.
